How to Search for Magic: The Gathering Cards

Get the most out of the search filters: names, colors, types, sets, multi-field sorting, favorites and shareable searches.

Start with a name, then narrow down

The quickest search is a card name. You do not need the whole name: typing a few distinctive letters, such as "bolt" or "counterspell", returns every card whose name contains them. If you get too many results, add filters instead of making the name longer.

When you do not know the name at all, leave the search box empty and use the filters alone. Choosing a color and a card type, for example, gives you a browsable list of every card that fits.

Filter by mana color

The mana color buttons filter on a card's color identity: white, blue, black, red and green. Selecting a color shows cards that use it. This is the fastest way to explore what a color can do, and it is useful when you are building a deck around one or two colors.

Color identity includes colors that appear in a card's rules text, not only in its mana cost, so it matches how the Commander format treats color. Our guide to the five colors explains what each one is good at.

Filter by card type and set

Card type filters cover creatures, instants, sorceries, artifacts, enchantments and lands. They are handy for questions like "which instants could I hold up on my opponent's turn" or "which artifacts are in this set".

The set filter limits results to one or more sets, which is useful for drafts, for checking a new release, or for finding a reprint you remember from a particular expansion. You can combine a set with color and type to get a very specific list.

Describe the cards in plain English

Switch the search box from Name to Describe it and type what you are after, for example "cheap blue instant" or "red creatures from Zendikar". Press Interpret and the site turns your sentence into the same color, type, set and sort filters you would otherwise pick by hand, then runs the search.

You can name a set in full, by its short code or even with a small spelling slip, so "blue instants from DMR" and "Dominaria Remastred" both find the set, and you can ask for more than one, as in "red creatures from Ice Age or Alliances".

A short summary shows what was understood, and the filters appear as chips you can remove or change. If the site is unsure about something, such as a second color or a set, it offers it as a suggestion instead of applying it. Searching by what a card does, such as "counters spells", is not supported yet, and the site tells you when part of your sentence could not be used.

Your sentence is sent to our search service and to a third-party AI service to work out the filters. Please do not include personal information in it.

Sort results your way

Results can be sorted by name, mana value, set or color identity, ascending or descending. You can stack several sort rules and reorder them by dragging, so you could sort by color first and then by mana value within each color. That gives you a ready-made mana curve view.

Save and share what you find

Use the heart on any card to add it to your favorites. The Favorites page lists everything you have saved, and it is kept in your browser so it is there next time you visit.

Your current search is reflected in the page address, so you can bookmark it or send the link to a friend and they will see the same filters applied. Using the browser's back and forward buttons steps through your recent searches.

A few worked examples

Some searches to try:

  • Cheap removal: choose red, pick Instant, and sort by mana value ascending.
  • Ramp creatures: choose green, pick Creature, and sort by mana value ascending to see the early plays.
  • Everything in one expansion: pick the set and leave the other filters empty, then sort by color identity.
  • Colorless options: pick Artifact and no color to see cards any deck can play.
